Whether you’re doing a short or long drive, driving safely should be your primary concern when you’re behind the wheels. No matter how skilled of a driver you are, accidents may happen anytime. This is why it is always best to reflect on your driving habits and see whether you’re following the rules of the roads to ensure your safety.
In reality, there can be hundreds of tips and reminders that you should consider driving responsibly. But we can agree that we may have or may not have memorized everything at once. This is why the purpose of this blog is to give you some of the most comprehensive tips that you should know to drive as safely as possible.
Check Your Car’s Condition
Before hitting the road to go to wherever you will be going, make sure first the condition of your vehicle. Don’t assume but instead make it a regular habit to know if your car is worth driving such as checking the tires, the brake, etc. so that you will avoid or minimize the risk of getting into an accident.
Prepare Yourself
Whether it is a short distance or a long drive, you should be physically and mentally prepared to be behind the wheels and drive. If you think that you’re in no condition to grab the wheels then it is best to have someone else drive for you. Do not assume and take risks when driving such as driving when drowsy as you can never tell what’s going to happen.
Focus While Driving
It’s probably our nature as a human to get distracted by something unique or unfamiliar to us when we’re doing something. The same goes when we are driving. However, it is important that while you’re behind the wheels and taking the road, your focus and attention should be dedicated to what you are doing (driving). Whether you are alone or not, you should be responsible when going to your destination safely.
Don’t let yourself be distracted such as multi-tasking while you’re holding the wheels—do not text and drive.
Make Adjustments When Needed
Depending on the weather, make adjustments when driving. Follow the right protocols such as driving moderately when it is raining, snowing, or foggy. So, be aware of your blind spots because your vehicle might get hit with a wrong move.
Use the headlights and right light signals whenever you are changing lanes, overtaking, making a U-Turn, etc. And always share the road—because you don’t own it—by respecting fellow drivers who are also on the road. Remember that, the road is not a racetrack for you to get ahead everytime.
Maintain The Right Distance
Regardless of how spacious the road is or whether a heavy traffic jam is happening, you, as the driver, should know that keeping a distance from other vehicles is needed to avoid a collision. Don’t follow too closely from the car ahead of you. The truth is, it is quite difficult to determine the exact distance your car should be from the vehicle in front of you, but there is a “three-second rule” that you can follow.
The idea of the “three-second rule” is to have a space between you and the car/vehicle in front. This helps avoid accidents whereas it takes 3 seconds for your car to reach the one that is in front. In this way, for any unforeseen circumstances, there’s an ample distance between two vehicles not to bump into each other.
Obey The Rules
Remember that when you’re on the road, not all drivers are the same. All types of drivers can be seen on the road and not every one of them is responsible and considerate enough to follow the law. So, don’t be that person who doesn’t care about the rules and signals when you’re behind the wheels.
Follow the right speed limit, slow down when you have to, stay alert, and most importantly, always put your seatbelt on.
